"People of this type do not evaluate the person themselves, but the feeling they evoke, that is, the relationship between that person and the ESI, and between the person and others. Having met a familiar face in the street, the ESI may not remember their name or who they are, but he will immediately remember their relationship - good or bad. Everything else is remembered later."

Opening Personal StatementsWritten by ImpossibleHunt

Well, this is my type. For some reason, many people assert that ESIs don't really exist in typical MBTI descriptions. I disagree with this claim, I just think ISFP type descriptions in MBTI have been butchered, and they often treated as a flowery, artistic SEI (ISFJ) 2.0 that wants to explore physical sensations than being something different. We already have that type...it's ISFJ. Personally, I don't see why MBTI needs to ISFJ types.

Even Jung described Fi as very outwardly cold, often times not very outwardly expressive, and Se strips all meaning from external objects. As such, I think ISFP and ESI fits well, but we need to build up the type from the ground up.

I find that many people overexaggerate the aggressive/bossy nature of the ESI; in reality, you are going to only see this side of them when they need to make their prescence known, or need to make a point. More specifically, someone close to them/ or someone they hate does something they find disagreeable. In most cases, they are going to have a more apathetic personality, which then can drastically shift. Otherwise, you are just looking at an Se base type (such as SEE and SLE).

Type Breakdown

Fi-Se Ego Block
(Fi-Se) - (Ni-Te) - (Fe-Si) - (Ne-Ti)

The Ego Block is the aspect of the personality you are the most confident in, and is what you offer to the world. It's the main dish of the course, and it's your signature. As such, the ego block is made up of the Base/Leading the Creative functions. The base function is your entire worldview; everything stems from it. The creative function is the sword to your kit, which you can use in any given situation. It's flexible, and importantly, can be turned on and off (which makes it more subtle in usage than the base function), as it's not "on" 24/7.

For the ESI (ISFP), the base and creative functions are Fi and Se.

While the actions and decisions of the ESI are indeed rigid (I'll get to that later), the moral framework of the ESI is anything but that. Fi in base position is incredibly flexible and fluid, and whether something is right or wrong depends on the variety of contexts the action is committed in. In essence, something can be both right and wrong at the same time. It depends on how everything comes together, the factors involved, etc. Each situation will have its own final judgement attached to it. There is no system or structure in place. An action that can be considered the morally wrong choice, might be considered the right one in another context.

To give a better explanation. Imagine an individual song. You have the melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, instruments used, vocals, etc. To an ESI, it's not about each individual element. The choice in instruments here can be amazing, whereas it can sound like garbage in another place because it doesn't mesh well. It's about how all of it comes together/ how the elements uniquely interact with each other, to form the piece of music as a whole. As a result, each song is going to have its own feeling attached to it, determined by the ESI listening to it. Each song is going to be either agreeable, disagreeable, okay, so-so, and that will determine how much the ESI likes it, or never wants to listen to it again.

Now apply that principle to people and situations, and you can get a sense of how an ESI picks the people they want to associate with, or chooses the "right" option at the time. It's now about each individual element comes together to form a single conclusion.

For people, it can be how they move, what they are wearing, their facial expression, how they speak to others, posture, smell, tone/diction, etc. It's not about any specific element, but about how all those factor together into a singular feeling/judgement about a person. The ESI can tell whether a person is a friend or enemy extremely quickly.

When it comes to making judgement calls, the ESI will consider the people involved, their personal sentiments, how close each individual person is to the ESI, and come up with a decision to have the best moral outcome, or what outcome "feels" the best for them. But every situation is going to be different, and can even have resolutions that, when assessed together, may logically go against another.

Once the ESI comes up with an assessment, they will then use volitional pressure to do the best they can, and they stick to those decisions. They can also make them exceedingly quick. As such, I tend to call Fi-Se the function that "makes the most of a bad situation." It tries to pick the "best" choice out of a series of morally grey options, making it well suited to making in-the-moment judgement calls in the absence of a structure to guide someone.

On one end, the ESI can easily be called a hypocrite. One action may be deemed wrong there, but in a certain context, it was the right option? Why is that? But to the ESI, it is simply because the context was differentWhereas someone who has Ti base would be perfectly content explaining the structure they use to come to decisions, an ESI values no such structure.

----------------------

A good explanation of this moral flexibility is Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto 4. Earlier in the game, Niko discovers that his cousin Roman's girlfriend Mallorie was having an affair with the loan shark, Vlad. But Mallorie was just doing so to repay Roman's debts, and to get back at him for his previous infidelity. So Niko keeps it a secret from Roman, both to not break Roman's heart, but to also protect Mallorie. A morally questionnable choice, but he felt it was the right call at the time. But once Roman finds out, and Niko sees the full extent of his cousin's anger and suffering, he now feels compelled to put an end to the whole affair, even though he kept it a secret previously. His actions are not determined through a system of approaching problems, but are entirely fuelled by his own personal sentiments, and of those he/she cares about.

"I will not have you call me disloyal, you might let some Russian asswipe bang your woman, but I won't."
"But you fucking did!"
"That was before I knew you cared!"

Another good example is Gwen Stacy from Into the Spiderverse

For Gwen, there is clearly no consistent framework to solving problems, or overlying principle that which she falls back on. It is all dependent on what she feels is right, and she does not look at issues from a strict perspective of "right and wrong.". She took on the mantle of Spider-Woman because she felt it was a badge, a commitment that she felt it was right for her to commit to. In every situation, she tries to make the "good" choice, even when making morally questionnable decisions. All these decisions were made in the moment, because Gwen believed they were the right call. Her personal sentiments drive her.

"I was trying so hard to wear this thing the way you'd want, and I didn't. I didn't. I can do all these things but I can't help the people I love the most (...) I don't even know what the right thing is anymore, I don't know what to do, but I know I can't lose one more friend."

But Gwen is also extremely perceptive of the personal sentiments of others, and even as her father was attempting to arrest her, she empathizes with him, calling him "a good cop" that takes on the role because he doesn't want others to do it. Therefore, when her father quit his job as an officer, it is all the evidence Gwen needed to forgive her father. She knows it is a big commitment, because she understands how her father feels. Captain Stacy does not need to be explicitly emotional in order for Gwen to understand the gravity of his choice.

Ti-Ne Superego
(Fi-Se) - (Ni-Te) - (Fe-Si) - (Ne-Ti)

If you are coming in from MBTI, this is where socionics begins to depart from it. The next area of focus is called the superego block, or the area in which uses to support their ego block. The two functions in this sphere are called the Role and the POLR (Point of Least Resistance) functions.

The Role element is the function you use to directly support, and to balance out your ego-block functions. It is not something you enjoy doing or value, but it needs to be done in order to balance yourself out as a person. You'll see this element a lot (which can lead to mistypings), and you can actually become quite proficient with this function with practice. The POLR function is the element you essentially keep locked up in your basement because it directly messes with the ego-block. As such, this is going to often be the function many struggle with using properly, and requires constant (and painful) trial-and-error to improve.

For the ESI, the role and POLR function is Ti and Ne

Ti Role effectively means that the ESI will try to balance out their sentiment focused conclusions, by tying into it an argument that has a certain logic to it. This can be somewhat compelling, and many people might end up mistyping an ESI as Ti base (usually an LSI) because they seem to be operating in accordance to the "social role" they are playing, or the system they are a part of.

An important distinction is, that the ESI will never try to create a new logical system. If they create an argument, it is always from a set of pre-existing systems and rules. If the ESI works in a bank and they refuse a loan to someone because they feel untrustworthy, the ESI will then try to balance out and explain their decision by appealing to the rules/systems set by the bank. If the ESI is a soldier, they might cite the chain of command and military structure in order to justify a judgement of someone. There is no incentive to be creative with rules, this is because the truth is, the ESI does not deem the rules and structures they are in to be of large importance. They'll pull from whatever rule-set they need to in order to make their judgements more "balanced," and to convince people as to why they are doing so.

------------------------

For example, in this scene, Captain Levi Ackerman is trying to convince Commander Erwin from participating in the conquest of Shiganshina. While some people might interpret this scene as Levi simply enforcing military structure, it quickly becomes apparent that Levi is only doing this to protect his friend from harm's way. He cites his friend's disability, and the need for the Scout Regiment to keep Erwin safe to ensure the best outcome long term.

However, the longer the conversation goes on, the more it begins to shift. Levi is not moved by logical/rationale arguments, but is ultimately moved by Erwin's personal wants and desires, which Levi finds far more convincing, and ultimately far more important than adherence to any sort of military protocol and structure. Realizing his friend's sentiments, no matter how selfish they are, he relents. Despite Levi believeing Erwin to be selfishly putting his own interests ahead of humanity's, it did not feel right for Levi to stop Erwin from seeing his dream through. So Levi makes a judgement call, and ends up trusting Erwin's judgement, hoping that Erwin's good self will win out in the end.

This example makes it clear a logical structure/framework is only important to Levi if it supports doing the right thing in his eyes. If it no longer suits his needs, he is completely willing to abandon those arguments. He later does this again, when he has to decide whether to save Erwin and Armin. He ends up making a decision, that while he believes is right, is not the logical choice for the Scout Regiment. This has consequences later on, as people such as Floch (LSI) who value adherence to a structure, see the Scout leadership as being selfish and ineffective in advancing the needs of the group.

Ne POLR is also a misunderstood function, as many associate it to be a general unwillingness to be curious. But in reality, Ne is centered around potential. Namely potential in people, things, structures, etc. ESIs, because of Ne POLR, don't guage their actions and judgements towards people on the possibility of them getting better or worse. They judge them on the here and now, through grounded, concrete observations and behaviour. This is where the ESI has a reputation of being unforgiving. It's not that they are unforgiving per-say, but they require consistent real-world evidence to see if that person has changed. Until they do, they put blinders on; because to them, granting people forgiveness or hatred based on the possibility of things changing is irresponsible, and can put themselves, and those they care about, at risk.

So when they physically see a person changing for the better, or disproving an incorrect assumption the ESI held towards them. It might take a while, but the ESI will often apologize (because to them, it would feel wrong of them not to). It might be a begruding apology, and you might be on thin-ice with them, but actions matter a lot more to an ESI than words, or potential. The more actions you commit to that heightens the ESIs perception of you, the more likely they'll want to close the distance and make amends.

Of course, this can lead to a few issues. An ESI might make a harsh assessment against someone which was wrong (or the victim has genuinely made progress in changing as a person), and refuse to change their minds about them, or be far slower to compared to almost any other type. ESIs are very pessimistic people, and don't think many people are capable of genuine change. Therefore, it is naive to assume that people can change on a whim, and don't give credence to such matters. But there are times that people do, and Ne POLR will be the slowest to accept that.

Te-Ni Super-id Block
(Fi-Se) - (Ni-Te) - (Fe-Si) - (Ne-Ti)

The Super-id block is made up of the two functions that the individual is weaker at, but consistently values and wants to get better at. This block has two functions, the mobilizing and the suggestive element. The mobilizing function is something that gives the individual energy, and is an avenue they want to keep actively pursuing to become better.

The Suggestive function is known the "inferior" function in MBTI, and is an aspect that the individual sucks at, needs lots of help and guidance with, but they are open to (and love people who can provide) feedback in this area.

For the ESI, the suggestive and mobilizing elements are Te and Ni

Te suggestive makes it so the ESI wants to become more productive and efficient, but has difficulty gauging their own productivity. ESIs are incredibly hard workers, but they might not necessarily be the most efficient, or feel that they are meaningfully contributing. So this is where someone can meaningfully direct them, and who possesses reliable information that makes the ESI trust their expertise. After enough trial and error, the ESI will learn to replicate those facts, strategies, and procedures for themselves, and for others.

This is one of the reasons why the ESI dualizes with the LIE (ENTJ), who can provide them with that constant feedback, that their actions are going to be rationale, and they will be of the best use they can possibly be. As such, ESIs are easily swayed in this area, and will make them defer to others more knowledgeable than themselves.

Mobilizing Ni makes it so that the ESI is drawn towards movements and causes that are bigger than themselves. However, instead of knowing for certain which choices are more meaningful, it's more of an intangible "instinct"that they can't really put their figure on. If a course of action proves to be more meaningful, and ESI will not often be able to answer a clear answer as to why they feel a venture is more meaningful. You might hear an ESI saying "I don't know why, but I need to do this."

Additionally, ESIs hate it when deadlines loom over their heads. This is because their relationship with time is uncertain, and covered in a haze. The longer the ESI has to wait, or the further into the future the "event" is, the more impulsive they get. This is an attempt to bring the event into the present, in where the ESI feels a lot more comfortable engaging with it. So these types can be pretty anxious if there is no one around to grant them certainty.

Fe-Si Id Block
(Fi-Se) - (Ni-Te) - (Fe-Si) - (Ne-Ti)

The Id Block is made up of functions the individual is very good at. but don't really care that much to talk about, or draw attention to. These two functions are called the Demonstrative and the Ignoring elements.

The Demonstrative element is something that is constantly running in the background, and many people might associate you as having. When it flairs up, tt's extremely bold, noticable, and it's actually the most potent function alongside your base/ dominant function. Because of this, it can lead to a load of mistypes if not careful, as you might think someone's demonstrative element is their base. However, the demonstrative element is not that interesting to the individual. They know they are good at it, but they don't see much value in investing too much time into this element.

The Ignoring function is pretty self-explanatory. It's potent, effective, and it can be used when you need to. But you would much rather spend your time and energy engaging with your ego block, so this is only used as "back-up" when the scenario calls for it. This element is effective and you're good at it, but it's not all that interesting to engage with.

For the ESI, the demonstrative and ignoring functions are Si and Fe

Demonstrative Si makes it so the ESI is very aware of the aesthetic sensations surrounding him/her. They can replicate these sensations and create environments where they feel comfortable. Usually this is very noticeable for outside onlookers, as the ESI usually will have a certain place, ritual, or activity they do to de-stress and keep themselves healthy. But being comfortable is not a life mission for the ESI, and indulging in these areas does not come very often. It usually boldly manifests only when it needs to. You might see an ESI decide a mess is too much to handle, and spontaneously start cleaning to make everything tidy again. Or they might isolate and go to their favourite place for some time alone, etc.

Finally, Fe ignoring is where ESIs get the "resting bitch face" allegations.

Namely, if an ESI does not find it agreeable in themselves to be friendly or jovial, they have no inclination to be. In fact, they are probably going to get annoyed with people who are overly cheerful or jovial for no reason. This does not mean the ESI cannot effectively lighten the mood if they need to, but it has to agree with their mood first. During first introductions, where the ESI is not forced to be "nice" (such as at work), the ESI will often be more of a quiet type. Most times (with people they feel no strong attitudes towards), they can appear apathetic, blunt, emotionless, cold, hard to get to know, etc.

How to Spot an ESI in Real Life
  • These are going to be quiet people, and individuals that do put too much effort into appearing likeable, or emotive. Is it not because they can't, it is just that if their mood does not the suit the situation, they will prefer to be apathetic.
  • Their behaviour might change depending on their relationship with you though. People they deeply care about, they will demonstrate a side to them that lots of people don't typically see. For people they heavily dislike, these types can be very hostile and aggressive if distance is not kept.
  • Will likely come across as intelligent people, because they will always support their arguments with logic, usually that of which takes the form of any structure/system they are expected to abide by. But if you question their logic, or if they discover new information about a person's sentiments, they will quickly abandon that logic in favour of their ethical judgements.
  • Will not change their minds about people, or their decisions on a whim. Very stubborn. Will get very annoyed with people who suggest for them to "open their minds" to alternative explanations to a person's behaviour. To ESIs, that is irresponsible. They need consistent, concrete observations about a person before they are willing to change their judgements on them.
  • Deeply value feedback on their productivity, as they wish to be more useful to people they care about. Will likely be anxious when it comes to looming deadlines or events, which can lead to impulsive behaviour in an effort to gain control over their lives. These types typically enjoy routines.
  • Very much in-tune with what makes them comfortable. They have their own sense of aesthetics, and know exactly what they need to relax. They don't need anyone else's help in that regard. But they would much rather spend their time doing something productive.
