"They are sure that if one is not aware of the natural order of the world, then one cannot live. Those who do not consider the current state of affairs are headed towards disaster. They prefer cynicism to hypocrisy. When the ILI is informed about a situation, they understand it thoroughly and very soon begin to tell the astonished interlocutor the details, causes, and aspects that they have missed. Their analysis is devoid of any self-indulgence."

Opening StatementsWritten by ImpossibleHunt

This is type that me (and seemingly everyone else) mistypes as at some point in their typology journey, because we seemingly have one capable brain cell. I myself have typed as an INTJ for years before I found ISFP (ESI) to be a lot more accurate. The first thing to note is that the INTJ is a very passive type, and is very susceptible to any sort of volitional pressure (and they react positively to it). They are not "mastermind" types, but are skilled as assessing cause-and-effect in patterns found in the past, and applying them to the present and future. They help give certainty to types prone to quick action, and in return, value people who can help to participate in the world they would otherwise be doomed to observe from a distance.

Another key aspect to ILIs that often gets ignored is they greatly value personal sentiments, and relationships. They are exceedingly selective with people they include in their lives, and very much want that connection. They just have a hard time facilitating that connection themselves. In short, the "INTJ 8w7" is the furthest thing from reality when it comes to these types.

Type Breakdown

Ni-Te Ego Block
(Ni-Te) - (Fi-Se) - (Ne-Ti) - (Fe-Si)

The Ego Block is the aspect of the personality you are the most confident in, and is what you offer to the world. It's the main dish of the course, and it's your signature. As such, the ego block is made up of the Base/Leading the Creative functions. The base function is your entire worldview; everything stems from it. The creative function is the sword to your kit, which you can use in any given situation. It's flexible, and importantly, can be turned on and off (which makes it more subtle in usage than the base function), as it's not "on" 24/7.

For the ILI, the base and creative functions are Ni and Te

So the INTJ personality type is one of the most butchered when coming over from MBTI, because people tend to have many different perceptions of what this type actually is like. To start, introverted intuition is not an "aha" function, these types don't pull their conclusions from nothing. When Ni is the leading function, it means these types are focused on observing trends, cause-and-effect, past events, and using that information to predict future events and trajectories.

To assist with this, the ILI is going to employ Te creative, a focus on factual accuracy and empiricism. The ILI is often going to come across as blunt, and sometimes harsh, because to them, the facts simply speak for themselves. They need their environments to make sense, and be relatively productive. However, they are not infused with this constant need to be proactive, industrious and efficient like the LIE is. In summary, the ILI is going to be focused on trends, and will use factual data and information to back this up. Often in a dispassionate, and blunt manner. These types are going to be extremely passive and detached, as they are focused more-so on observation, rather than participation.

A good example of an ILI is Lain Iwakura, the protagonist of Serial Experiments Lain. Throughout most of the show, Lain spends her time in her room interacting with the wired (a version of the internet), and tries to comprehend how the internet is going to affect humanity. Very little actually happens in the series, and most of it is a detached analysis of people, systems, and how technology is going to affect human socialization. The series itself has become a landmark, and many credit it of predicting how the rise of the internet would affect people and society at large decades in advance.

Si-Fe Superego
(Ni-Te) - (Fi-Se) - (Ne-Ti) - (Fe-Si)

If you are coming in from MBTI, this is where socionics begins to depart from it. The next area of focus is called the superego block, or the area in which uses to support their ego block. The two functions in this sphere are called the Role and the POLR (Point of Least Resistance) functions.

The Role element is the function you use to directly support, and to balance out your ego-block functions. It is not something you enjoy doing or value, but it needs to be done in order to balance yourself out as a person. You'll see this element a lot (which can lead to mistypings), and you can actually become quite proficient with this function with practice. The POLR function is the element you essentially keep locked up in your basement because it directly messes with the ego-block. As such, this is going to often be the function many struggle with using properly, and requires constant (and painful) trial-and-error to improve.

For the ILI, the role and POLR functions are Si and Fe

The ILI is not going to value efforts to get them to relax 24/7, despite them being relatively okay at having their physical needs and states met. This is because ILIs want desperately to do more than just observe the world from an outside lens, they want to actively participate in it. A life that is just focused on comforts seems meaningless to them. They want to overcome their hesitation in acting, not just sit around even more than what they are probably doing right now.

Fe POLR generally means the ILI is going to look like they just got their soul sucked out by a Dementor. There is going to be very little expression in their face, and they don't see much value in external emotionality. In the rare event, this type needs to be expressive, they are going to have a very difficult time. People who rely and need external emotions to get a gauge of how a person is feeling, is going to be consistently uneasy around an ILI, and probably will think the ILI just doesn't care about that particular individual. The ILI does care deeply about interpersonal connections, but feels that sentiments are more valuable when left unsaid, but are understood between two people despite it not appearing on the surface. So, ILIs are not going to be the people others are drawn, and they don't see much need to improve in this area. I mean, that's cool and all. But if your parents send you to get tested for autism, don't go crying to anyone else lol.

Fi-Se Super-Id Block
(Ni-Te) - (Fi-Se) - (Ne-Ti) - (Fe-Si)

The Super-id block is made up of the two functions that the individual is weaker at, but consistently values and wants to get better at. This block has two functions, the mobilizing and the suggestive element. The mobilizing function is something that gives the individual energy, and is an avenue they want to keep actively pursuing to become better.

The Suggestive function is known the "inferior" function in MBTI, and is an aspect that the individual sucks at, needs lots of help and guidance with, but they are open to (and love people who can provide) feedback in this area.

For the ILI, the suggestive and POLR function is Se and Fi

The way I describe Se suggestive, is that effectively the ILI is a balloon that is at risk of staying in the air forever, and cannot ever touch the ground. They effectively need someone to help them with that, and these types desperately want to play a larger part in the world, and to determine their own destinies. They just lack the volitional capabilities to do it themselves. This is why the ILI dualizes with the SEE (ESFP), who can effectively be that person to grab the balloon string, and pull them back to the ground, so they can be a bigger part of the world, instead of just a passive observer.

The mobilizing function of the ILI, which means they greatly value interpersonal connections and sentiments, and their life's mission is often to find someone to have a meaningful relationship/friendship with. However, the ILI is going to have a very difficult time establishing those connections themselves, and need someone to take the initiative in their stead. Especially because the ILI has Fe POLR, getting external feedback from them can be exceptionally difficult. But do know that whatever you do get from the ILI, emotional or not, is going to be 100% genuine.

"Why are you crying Ikari? Please forgive me, in situations like these, I don't know how to respond or act."
"Smiling would be a good start."

Ne-Ti Id Block
(Ni-Te) - (Fi-Se) - (Ne-Ti) - (Fe-Si)

The Id Block is made up of functions the individual is very good at. but don't really care that much to talk about, or draw attention to. These two functions are called the Demonstrative and the Ignoring elements.

The Demonstrative element is something that is constantly running in the background, and many people might associate you as having. When it flairs up, tt's extremely bold, noticable, and it's actually the most potent function alongside your base/ dominant function. Because of this, it can lead to a load of mistypes if not careful, as you might think someone's demonstrative element is their base. However, the demonstrative element is not that interesting to the individual. They know they are good at it, but they don't see much value in investing too much time into this element.

The Ignoring function is pretty self-explanatory. It's potent, effective, and it can be used when you need to. But you would much rather spend your time and energy engaging with your ego block, so this is only used as "back-up" when the scenario calls for it. This element is effective and you're good at it, but it's not all that interesting to engage with.

For the ILI, the ignoring and demonstrative elements are Ne and Ti

Having Ne ignoring means that the ILI is well enough aware of the connections and allusions between a variety of knowledge bases, and can create connections from them. However, he/she is going to be far more interested and preoccupied assessing singular trends through cause-and-effect, which requires honing in on a few select ideas, instead of expanding upon them. Therefore, these types are going to treat brainstorming as something more of a novelty, rather than something to take seriously.

Ti Demonstrative is essentially why the ILI gets called a dick lots of the time. They have a need to criticize anything that seems illogically inconsistent, which is why this type is often called "The Critic" in Socionics circles. However, the ILI tends to treat this as more of an exercise than anything imporant, and really does not care much about logical consistency, as long as the facts and empirical data are correct.

How To Spot an ILI (INTJ) in Real Life

  • This is going to be someone who is incredibly detached, passive, and someone who very much drifts wherever life takes him/her. Meanwhile, they are going to be people who are very skilled in assessing trends, and where those trends will lead in the future through cause-and-effect, Expectionally patient, fact-oriented and a tendency to be blunt when explaining their assessments.
  • Can manage their own comforts relatively well, and keep their day-to-day affairs in order, but want their lives to have more excitement to them than just living...well, day-to-day.
  • About as expressive as someone at a closed-casket funeral, and they don't see much incentive for improving in this area. You might question whether they have autism or not.
  • Deeply values people who can get them outside, and have them engage with activities outside their norm. They want to become people who can assert their own will, and actively participate in the world around them, instead of remaining strictly observers.
  • Deepy values interpersonal relationships, but has trouble starting/ and/or taking the initiative to start them. Would much rather someone take the reins in that regard.
  • Good at brainstorming, but would much rather focus on a few specific ideas, instead of being stretched thin, so-to-speak.
  • Will have a need to crtique and point out flaws in people's arguments, but does not believe the world can be crammed into one small system. So they don't put too much focus on this area, as long you're facts are correct, they don't mind logical inconsistency that much.
