"A friendly, well-meaning and optimistic person. They do not impose their will on others, and hide their true feelings and worries behind a mask of constant warmth, affection, and smiles. They neither ask nor demand favours from others, always trying to satisfy their needs on his own."
- Aushra

Opening StatementsWritten by ImpossibleHunt

Easily the most underrated type in socionics, and it's not even close. That is unfortunate, because this is a goated personality type, and is personally my favourite in Alpha Quadra. These types are grounded, tough, in-tune with their enviornments, physical, but are incredibly giving, friendly, and put the needs of whatever group they are in above their own. Meaning if you throw this type into an apocalyptic scenario, they will easily become an indispesible member of the group.

The amount of artistic expression of the SEI is also undervalued in type descriptions. These types can watch the same movie, view the same piece, engage with the same activity, and find the same depth and nuance in it every time. These types can also be quite intimidating when they need to be, or to enforce their comfort zones, or to keep people in line. It's not as "explosive" as it is with the ESE though. It's just enough pressure for things to return to normal. In any case, if you type as an SEI, you are a valuable member of the community.

Type Breakdown

Si-Fe Ego Block
(Si-Fe) - (Ti-Ne) - (Se-Fi) - (Te-Ni)

The Ego Block is the aspect of the personality you are the most confident in, and is what you offer to the world. It's the main dish of the course, and it's your signature. As such, the ego block is made up of the Base/Leading the Creative functions. The base function is your entire worldview; everything stems from it. The creative function is the sword to your kit, which you can use in any given situation. It's flexible, and importantly, can be turned on and off (which makes it more subtle in usage than the base function), as it's not "on" 24/7.

For the SEI (ISFJ), the base and creative functions are Si and Fe.

The SEI is foremost concerned with engaging with, and recreating, physical experiences in which they feel great power and comfort. In this case, comfort does not automatically mean laziness. For example, a person can feel most "comfortable" drowning themselves in work, because the experiences surrounding the work, its environment, etc, are all contributing to making the SEI feel at "home." Recreating their past states is a way of dissociating from the trials of life. They can perceive the subtleties of art, and how each subtlety is reflective of their own experience.

To achieve this, the SEI will selectively use Fe "on" and "off" when needed, becoming relatively expressive and emotionally open to help make others feel comfortable. But it's not a bold function, so the Fe and emotional expression of an SEI is going to be a bit more withdrawn, and selective. But it's always going to be used to get the SEI back into the sphere in which they are most comfortable in. Whatever that might look like, and they'll be very perceptive of the details in their environment to make it happen. But at the same time they are constantly adjusting to their environment, and taking in information to develop new rituals and "imprints" their experiences with physical circumstances and people leave them.

A good example of an SEI is Miles Morales from Into the Spiderverse. In one of the most iconics scenes of the film, Miles becomes Spiderman. But the scene itself has no dialogue from Miles himself. You only have Miles memories and experiences all supporting his transition into Spiderman. You have his father saying, "I see this spark in you, it's amazing! Whatever you choose to do with it you'll be great." His mother saying "our family doesn't run from things." His uncle saying "you're the best of all of us Miles. Keep going.

"When do I know I'm Spider-Man?
"You won't. That's how it is Miles. A leap of faith."

All these imprints, memories, and how it made him; all of it coalesces when he finally takes that leap of faith.

Ni-Te Superego
(Si-Fe) - (Ti-Ne) - (Se-Fi) - (Te-Ni)

If you are coming in from MBTI, this is where socionics begins to depart from it. The next area of focus is called the superego block, or the area in which uses to support their ego block. The two functions in this sphere are called the Role and the POLR (Point of Least Resistance) functions.

The Role element is the function you use to directly support, and to balance out your ego-block functions. It is not something you enjoy doing or value, but it needs to be done in order to balance yourself out as a person. You'll see this element a lot (which can lead to mistypings), and you can actually become quite proficient with this function with practice. The POLR function is the element you essentially keep locked up in your basement because it directly messes with the ego-block. As such, this is going to often be the function many struggle with using properly, and requires constant (and painful) trial-and-error to improve.

For the SEI, their role and POLR functions are Ni and Te

So what does this mean? Well for Ni role, it means the SEI can turn their attention towards the future in brief bursts, enough to where many people might mistype them as IEI (INFJ), which is a very common mistype. However, the focus of the SEI will always be drawn back to the present, and their immediate surroundings. They might see that looking too far into the future quickly leans into having "faith" that things will turn out the way you hope. To an SEI, that is, to them, far more unreliable than just sticking to what's in front of you. But they will use Ni a decent amount to balance out their Si-Fe, or to argue how keeping a space "comfortable" for them will pay off positively in the future.

What the SEI will really struggle with understanding is Te. The SEI does not see the value in objective information by itself, and is skeptical of information that is not derived from hands-on experience. A person that gets their information by strictly reading many books on the subject (like most Te-ego types), will typically be waved away by the SEI. They strongly dislike dealing with matters such as efficiency and productivity. An SEI is built for maximizing the comfort and acceptance of others, and people trying to min max their lives in an attempt to move them faster, are not going to be appreciated. Life to an SEI is meant to be savoured and experienced in full, not brushed aside to simply get things done quicker, or for whatever fact is more pragmatic or rational. Their life, experiences, and story are their own.

"Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah, I'mma do my own thing."

Ne-Ti SuperId Block
(Si-Fe) - (Ti-Ne) - (Se-Fi) - (Te-Ni)

The Super-id block is made up of the two functions that the indivdiual is weaker at, but consistently values and wants to get better at. This block has two functions, the mobilizing and the suggestive element. The mobilizing function is something that gives the individual energy, and is an avenue they want to keep actively pursuing to become better. The Suggestive function is known the "inferior" function in MBTI, and is an aspect that the individual sucks at, needs lots of help and guidance with, but they are open to (and love people who can provide) feedback in this area. Hence the name "suggestive," I suggest you do this, sort of thing (hopefully I don't sound like an idiot).

For the SEI, the suggestive and mobilizing functions are Ne and Ti

Ne suggestive makes the SEI greatly value and respect people who are always trying to do something new, and brings out the possibilities in people. Potential is something that the SEI is not very good at assessing in themselves and others, but is something they want to get better at. So often times, you'll find that SEIs will diminish their own potential in an effort for people to come to them easier (to make themselves more welcoming and accomodating). They are very humble types. However, they want someone who can recognize their own potential, and greatly value their insights on the matter. Someone who can tell them that their lives are specifically worth living because of their makes them feel fufilled.

Ti mobilizing makes the SEI actually very much interested in discussions revolving philosophy, and bringing a cohesive system in how to understand life. They want to make sense of their own actions. But since they are themselves often unsure of the logic behind their own actions, you might find these types will sort of argue themselves in circles. It's a bold function, but you'll find that there logical systems are not as concise or flexible as Ti ego types.

Fi-Se Id Block
(Si-Fe) - (Ti-Ne) - (Se-Fi) - (Te-Ni)

The Id Block is made up of functions the individual is very good at. but don't really care that much to talk about, or draw attention to. These two functions are called the Demonstrative and the Ignoring elements.

The Demonstrative element is something that is constantly running in the background, and many people might associate you as having. When it flairs up, tt's extremely bold, noticable, and it's actually the most potent function alongside your base/ dominant function. Because of this, it can lead to a load of mistypes if not careful, as you might think someone's demonstrative element is their base. However, the demonstrative element is not that interesting to the individual. They know they are good at it, but they don't see much value in investing too much time into this element.

The Ignoring function is pretty self-explanatory. It's potent, effective, and it can be used when you need to. But you would much rather spend your time and energy engaging with your ego block, so this is only used as "back-up" when the scenario calls for it.

For the SEI, the demonstrative and ignoring functions are Fi and Se.

Fi demonstrative makes the SEI exceedingly capable in reading the strength of an emotional connection, even if there are very little external emotional signs on the surface. If there is an old married couple the SEI sees that does not smile, hold hands, etc. The SEI can usually examine the relationship between them, and the amount of emotional intimacy. This can sometimes get them mistyped as ESI (ISFP). However, the SEI, despite being good at this, values his/her membership within the context of a group. They value group harmony before all else, so for the most part, if push comes to shove they are not going to jeapordize the atmosphere of a group based on interpersonal likes and dislikes.

Se ignoring is pretty easy to explain. Generally an SEI is capable in using volitional pressure to get what they want, but they don't like to do so, or don't find it interesting. They will only do so if it helps maintain the emotional atmosphere that they want. So typically, this will come out when someone is being a dick, or doing things to make people feel uncomfortable. If being nice doesn't work, an SEI will have no issue getting physical. It won't be explosive though. They know precisely the amount of pressure to apply to get things back to normal.

An excellent example of Se ignoring is from Rena Ryuugu the Higurashi: When They Cry. Rena is a person that values keeping the group together (because she feels most comfortable and at home when everyone is getting along with no drama), and adopts a playful facade to steer things in that direction. So she does not value conflict. However, if it does need to happen, Rena can suddenly switch on the "pressure" gauge to a pretty positive effect. She will stare you down, grab your attention, suddenly raise her voice to drop your guard and get in extremely close to make sure that what she is saying gets through you. As soon as you back off, then she's back to normal, and tries to bring it back down to "zero." Again, extreme example (Higurashi is a horror story for a reason), but even amongst the characters, Rena is particularly good at standing her ground and making her point clear when she needs to. She does a few times throughout the series, including yelling at Keichi when he keeps accusing his classmates of being okay with the abuse of one of their classmates, Rena being the only one to say "that's enough" and push back.

Unlike the ESE, where their Se is always running in the background (Se demonstrative), the Se ignoring of the SEI is very selective.

~How to Spot SEIs in Real Life ~

  • These are individuals that are very much focused on being comfortable; either in their participation in a group, or contributing to their own relationships with others. To achieve this, they will often adopt an enthusiastic and humble demeanour to make everyone feel at home and safe. This is all to foster an aesthetic physical enviornment in where they feel "right."
  • These types may frequently bring up future predictions in order to support their need to keep things "light" and relaxed, "we should keep things like this, because this might happen in the future." This is to purely support their need to feel comfortable however. The SEI will much prefer to keep themselves entirely focused on their immediate physical surroundings. This differs from IEIs (INFJs) who spend most of their time percieving patterns, and are incredibly detached as a norm.
  • SEIs do not value having their lives min maxed for productivity. Their experiences are meant to be taked in, and appreciated for what they are. So these types, while they might be incredibly industrious (in particular SO9 SEIs), their day-to-day motions may not be that effecient.
  • Deeply value people who are curious, want to explore new ideas, try to keep things lighthearted, and want people who can see their own potential as people.
  • They are often physically capable, and are skilled at percieving the nuance of relationships even if there are no external signs of happiness. However, they will vastly prefer to keep the atmosphere around them "light," and won't jeapodarize it. Volitional pressure is used only if it helps them maintain a calm atmosphere, to quell "problematic" people, etc.
