"For the IEI's Ego the object of study is time. But there is no such thing as time in general, it is always a stream of processes. For the IEI the past and future are sequences of fluid moods, the finest web of spiriual experiences. They live by the emotional spirit of the time."

Opening StatementsWritten by ImpossibleHunt

To be perfectly honest, this was the hardest type for me to write about. Not really because this type is more "mysterious" than others, but because this type is just really weird. It is a meme at this point, but the vast majority of people who type as INFJ are really not, and it's weird because I don't think IEIs are even that rare (at least according to Aushra's Duality of Man). But at the same time, there are a lot of misconceptions about INFJs, that socionics does much to remove the "mysticism" that is often applied to them.

IEIs (and Ni base in general) is just really skilled at assessing cause-and-effect, and noticing patterns in the past that are observable in the present, and future. They are not magicians. Their insights come from somewhere. But these types are going to be incredibly detached, passive, and will likely blow over if a gust of wind knocks them the right way (and they secretly enjoy it). As such, the "INFJ sigma" meme is hilarious because of how blatantly false it is. These types just want to passively observe, keep things relatively light and upbeat, give predictions, and want people to help them become more active in life.

Type Breakdown

Ni-Fe Ego Block
(Ni-Fe) - (Ti-Se) - (Ne-Fi) - (Te-Si)

The Ego Block is the aspect of the personality you are the most confident in, and is what you offer to the world. It's the main dish of the course, and it's your signature. As such, the ego block is made up of the Base/Leading the Creative functions. The base function is your entire worldview; everything stems from it. The creative function is the sword to your kit, which you can use in any given situation. It's flexible, and importantly, can be turned on and off (which makes it more subtle in usage than the base function), as it's not "on" 24/7.

For the IEI (INFJ), their base and creative functions are Ni and Fe.

The Ni base of the IEI, is foremost concerned with time, and how events, symbols and various forms of meaning can change over time. The IEI does not force any of these changes themselves, as they operate primarily as detached observers. To do this, Ni base will seek out patterns from the past, and follow those cause-and-effect ties towards the future. Many people see that Ni base is this weird fortune-teller function that gets its insights from essentially nowhere (the "aha" meme), which is ridiculous. Ni base looks at past trends to determine future outcomes, and watches dispassionately from the distance. As such, they are fixated with symbols and how they can change. In return for this dispassionate approach to life, these types are extremely inactive and passive. I think PDB underestimates just how "weird" these types often come across as.

In addition, creative Fe is going to make these types sensitive to the external emotional enviornment around them. This type craves emotional positivity, and dislikes drama/ negative emotions. So if they need to affect the atmosphere to be more suitable for them, they have no issue being "upbeat," "cheery," or "friendly" to make people more relaxed, and the mood more light.

A good example of an IEI is the "Stalker" character from Tartovsky's Stalker (1979), who ventures into the zone with the "writer" and "professor" to acquire a wish. The whole movie is an Ni base's wet-dream where virtually nothing happens, and the three main characters (who are symbols themselves) argue and philosophize about human existence. The Stalker character is arguably the most passive of the three, whereas the professor and writer both argue for their own worldviews, the Stalker sits back, observes, and predicts where the ideas presented by the "writer" and "professor" will end up in the end.

Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter is another excellent example, and she captures how detached and almost cerebral most IEIs come across. When people have stolen her stuff and scattered it throughout Hogwarts, she exerts no pressure on Harry to find them (nor seems very concerned with making those responsible tell them where it is). She claims it is all in "good fun," keeping the atmosphere around her light despite her predicament. But despite her passivity, she gives Harry Potter advice and manages to cool him off (even when Dumbledore couldn't). Her statement to Harry, that "everything that is lost often finds its way back in the end," helps to give him certainty in the future, and to alleviate his fears. This is what Base Ni contributes to the world, it makes the future a little less...uncertain for everyone else. Ni base is not some fortune teller function that conjures predictions out of nothing, it measures "cause and effect."

Si-Te Supergo
(Ni-Fe) - (Ti-Se) - (Ne-Fi) - (Te-Si)

If you are coming in from MBTI, this is where socionics begins to depart from it. The next area of focus is called the superego block, or the area in which uses to support their ego block. The two functions in this sphere are called the Role and the POLR (Point of Least Resistance) functions.

The Role element is the function you use to directly support, and to balance out your ego-block functions. It is not something you enjoy doing or value, but it needs to be done in order to balance yourself out as a person. You'll see this element a lot (which can lead to mistypings), and you can actually become quite proficient with this function with practice. The POLR function is the element you essentially keep locked up in your basement because it directly messes with the ego-block. As such, this is going to often be the function many struggle with using properly, and requires constant (and painful) trial-and-error to improve.

For the IEI, the role and POLR functions are Si and Te.

Si Role for IEI is a bit of a mixed-bag. They can use it in short bursts, and can fashion themselves an environment that is comfortable (or at least fits society's definition of what being comfortable means), that way they can still remain detached and observe the world. It's enough to keep their affairs in order, and some people might see these types as "lazy," and see that they have their routines, and just associate them as being Si base. But these types will get annoyed at people who insist on being comfortable above all else. They want to learn to take action in the world, and don't want to just sit on their laurels. So while an IEI will use Si to keep their affairs in order, that's about all they use it for.

The IEI trusts their own insights and conclusions about cause/effect, and are distrustful of secondary sources that conflict with their conclusions. This is where Te POLR can be an issue for IEIs, where sometimes while their insights about the world might be interesting, they may not be reflected in hard data and facts. These types are also not the productive sorts, and much rather prefer keeping things slow, and being able to ponder the meaning of life, and dispassionately observe patterns in their environment. If you pressure an IEI to move quicker, to become more efficient/ productive, they will react poorly.

Se-Ti Super-id
(Ni-Fe) - (Ti-Se) - (Ne-Fi) - (Te-Si)

The Super-id block is made up of the two functions that the individual is weaker at, but consistently values and wants to get better at. This block has two functions, the mobilizing and the suggestive element. The mobilizing function is something that gives the individual energy, and is an avenue they want to keep actively pursuing to become better.

The Suggestive function is known the "inferior" function in MBTI, and is an aspect that the individual sucks at, needs lots of help and guidance with, but they are open to (and love people who can provide) feedback in this area.

For the IEI, the suggestive and mobilizing function is Se and Ti.

Inertia is a huge problem for IEIs, and they will often find it very difficult to find the motivation to find new interests, and to engage with the outside world. Because of this difficulty, they are going to need a push from an external force to make that leap of faith. Se ego users (such as the SLE) are the perfect people to get them to finally begin moving, and experience life to it's fullest. A good analogy I found is that an IEI is like a balloon floating constantly in the air, that wants to interact with the ground below but can't reach it. The job of an Se user (such as an SLE) is to grab the string of the balloon and pull it down to the ground. Through the help of others, the IEI can get out of their heads, and take a more forceful role in interacting with the world on their own terms.

Ti mobilizing makes it so that IEIs really enjoy discussing philosophy and intellectual structures for perceiving the world, but they have trouble being logically consistent doing so. You might find that these types will philosophize endlessly, and talk themselves in circles because there is not much of a structure to their arguments. Like seriously, these types will talk for hours if you let them, and it feels like you aren't getting anywhere lol.

A good example of this is Ulysses from Fallout New Vegas. This is a man highly fixated on symbols (such as the bear that represents the NCR, and the bull that represents Caesar's Legion). But, if you have played Lonesome Road, you'll know. He will talk. Non-stop. And like, what the fuck is he actually saying after the first 15 minutes? It's like your dementia ridden Grandmother driving her car, and then taking every single wrong turn before she finally gets back home.

Fi-Ne Id Block

(Ni-Fe) - (Ti-Se) - (Ne-Fi) - (Te-Si)

The Id Block is made up of functions the individual is very good at. but don't really care that much to talk about, or draw attention to. These two functions are called the Demonstrative and the Ignoring elements.

The Demonstrative element is something that is constantly running in the background, and many people might associate you as having. When it flairs up, tt's extremely bold, noticable, and it's actually the most potent function alongside your base/ dominant function. Because of this, it can lead to a load of mistypes if not careful, as you might think someone's demonstrative element is their base. However, the demonstrative element is not that interesting to the individual. They know they are good at it, but they don't see much value in investing too much time into this element.

The Ignoring function is pretty self-explanatory. It's potent, effective, and it can be used when you need to. But you would much rather spend your time and energy engaging with your ego block, so this is only used as "back-up" when the scenario calls for it. This element is effective and you're good at it, but it's not all that interesting to engage with.

For the IEI, the demonstrative and ignoring functions are Fi and Ne.

With Fi demonstrative, the IEI is instantly aware of the status of relations between people in the absence of external emotions. For example, if an IEI sees an old passing couple that are not smiling, not holding hands, etc; he/she will still be able to tell that this couple loves each other immensely, whereas other types (such as the SLE) will automatically assume it's a loveless relationship. However, the IEI does not find these particular sentiments all that interesting, at least in comparison to creating a positive and upbeat atmosphere with others. Meaning, they aren't going to let personal sentiments get in the way of keeping everyone happy.

Ne ignoring makes the IEI aware of the potential surrounding objects and people, and can effectively connect various knowledge basis together, but would much rather dedicate their time assessing the cause and effect of human behaviours and actions. They treat these alternative musings as a novelty, rather than someting to be taken seriously.

How to find an IEI (INFJ) in real life:

  • These individuals are very passive, detached, and much prefer sitting in the background, and observing everyone. Will be extremely effective in examining cause-and-effect patterns, and then predicting future outcomes from those patterns (they are not fortune tellers, or magical. They don't pull their answers from nothing). But these types are also friendly, and will do what they can to keep everyting light and positive. These aren't types that are going to force anything on anyone, and if they ask for something, it is going to be done very politely, and tactfully.
  • These types will have their routines, and will keep their spaces comfortable enough to allow themselves time to detach from reality. However, these types really do want to interact with the real-world, but just lack the ability to do so without help.
  • Not very practical people, nor are they necessarily productive. These are not going to be people who get things done effeciently, nor do they value being pressured to perform.
  • Deeply value help from others (especially SLEs) who will help them to engage with activities, and to lead more busy lives. Through this, the IEI responds very well to being pushed to do things.
  • These types will talk a lot about their theories and conclusions, with no clear resolution in sight.
  • Understands unspoken interpersonal sentiments very well, but will prioritize keeping everyone happy.
