"When they have to take care only of themselves, SLIs often appear to be just lazy. When taking care of their loved ones, they demonstrate great entrepreneurial spirit, industriousness and the ability to make ends meet in the most improbable situations. They love the work that others cannot do."

Opening StatementsWritten by ImpossibleHunt

Much in a similar manner I call the LSI ISTP, the SLI is one the few types where I find the "J and P switch" is essential to understanding this type. This is because I find that SLI is absolutely focused on keeping their comfort zones working and good-to-go, and so need a key awareness of their physical states. In MBTI, for some reason ISTJ is very difficult to seperate from conceptions of Si. So doing the J and P switch actually does wonders to helping people understand what introverted sensing actually does, which is essential to the SLI.

The SLi is essentially the type that "just wants to grill." They want to keep doing whatever makes them comfortable, and don't need a whole lot else to survive. As such, the loner "action hero" stereotype is more accurate to SLI ISTJ than ISTP. But another core aspect to the ISTJ is a need to move towards a core emotional connection/ relationship with special people. They just... sort of suck at creating those connections themselves, and need help in this area to make their intentions clear.

Type Breakdown

Si-Te Ego Block
(Si-Te) - (Fi-Ne) - (Se-Ti) - (Fe-Ni)

The Ego Block is the aspect of the personality you are the most confident in, and is what you offer to the world. It's the main dish of the course, and it's your signature. As such, the ego block is made up of the Base/Leading the Creative functions. The base function is your entire worldview; everything stems from it. The creative function is the sword to your kit, which you can use in any given situation. It's flexible, and importantly, can be turned on and off (which makes it more subtle in usage than the base function), as it's not "on" 24/7.

For the SLI, the base and creative functions are Si and Te.

The main motivation of the SLI is to avoid discomfort, or to engage with physical sensations that make them feel most comfortable. They are very keenly aware of their own physical states, and seek out experiences that satisfy their needs. Of course, what makes an SLI comfortable can be a wide array of things. It can be staying at home, it can be hunting, cooking, car maintenance, etc. There is no clear definition of what that comfort looks like, but it's always in a state of flux. This means the SLI can often adapt to any situation, and find something to take out of it that satisfies their inner physical experience, and a new "ritual" to coincide with it. These types effectively want to live in peace, and dissociate from life (which is why SLIs almost exclusively fit SP9 to a tee).

A good example of this is Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan. In comparison to the wants and desires of many others in the Scout Regiment, Mikasa's motivations are a lot more simple. She is not motivated to secure a place for humanity's future, or some grander cause. Instead, she wants to live out her days in peace with Eren, and if she had her way, she would return to Shiganshina with him, and live out the rest of her life without the threat of death. Despite all the death, destruction, and suffering; Mikasa could dissociate from it all. Mikasa is someone who is foremost concerned with her physical experiences, and often thinks back on her experiences, and the "lessons" life has taught her through the imprints it left on her. Her memories, experiences, imprints (and relationships) all give her the strength to persevere. It is not simply a novelty to her, Si is the kery focus of her entire life.

Spike Spegeil is another individual where his experiences, memories, and the imprints he has recieved from those memories, form the core of who he is. Some even describe the man as a "ghost" who is chasing after the past, to recreate the memories he holds so dear. Even in his moments where he is falling (presumably) to his death after a church shootout, the only thing on his mind is his memories playing on repeat. His love, his past life as a member of a gang, his final gift to Julia before he ran away to start a new life, etc. All those have left an imprint on who, and formed who he is today. He is a man who is created from the sum of his past physical states.

In summary, SLIs can make something work in even the harshest of circumstances. To accomplish this need, the SLI is always going to make sure their immediate environment is practical, reasonable, and efficient. With comfort being the main priority, the SLI will develop systems and mechanics to prioritize that comfort, or to eventually get them to a place that will. Creative Te also manifests in blunt, harsh language; of which wants to get the facts out quickly. But the key aim of all of this is to create a sense of peace; a positive physical experience.

Ni-Fe Superego
(Si-Te) - (Fi-Ne) - (Se-Ti) - (Fe-Ni)

If you are coming in from MBTI, this is where socionics begins to depart from it. The next area of focus is called the superego block, or the area in which uses to support their ego block. The two functions in this sphere are called the Role and the POLR (Point of Least Resistance) functions.

The Role element is the function you use to directly support, and to balance out your ego-block functions. It is not something you enjoy doing or value, but it needs to be done in order to balance yourself out as a person. You'll see this element a lot (which can lead to mistypings), and you can actually become quite proficient with this function with practice. The POLR function is the element you essentially keep locked up in your basement because it directly messes with the ego-block. As such, this is going to often be the function many struggle with using properly, and requires constant (and painful) trial-and-error to improve.

For the SLI, the role and POLR functions are Ni and Fe

Introverted intuition is concerned with "cause-and-effect," the unseen meaning to life, and the flow of time. The SLI is foremost concerned with whatever is occurring in their present environments. However, in short bursts, they can reflect on those patterns to decipher a hidden meaning to life. However, it is always going to be used to support their own physical states and experiences, and it is going to reflect those same experiences. And eventually, the SLi is going to grow disinterested in such musings, and will fall back into their same patterns and routines, or their day-to-day work.

For example, Solid Snake is an individual that is solely concerned with being a soldier, and completing his missions. He is extremely grounded, which serves as a direct contrast to the amount of BS that regularly occurs in a Metal Gear Solid experience. However, he does have philosophical views on where the state of humanity is going to lead, and how people are going to find meanings in that uncertain future. But despite those musings, his advice is to focus on the day-to-day things we can do to pass information on. Human experiences that focus on transmitting positive physical states, such as art, music, etc. We can pass on more than DNA. Being grounded is what makes us human, even in the digital age. His advice always leads back to removing yourself from any bigger picture, and focusing on your own life circumstances. Staying grounded in the face of a complex world.

Fe POLR is generally easy to explain, it just means the SLI is going to be as emotionally expressive as someone watching paint dry, and they place no importance on emoting. This is because the SLI values interpersonal relationships that can understand what is "unsaid." They value interpersonal sentiments far more than expressing those emotions out loud. So if you ask an SLI to host a celebration, you might need to get your head checked, because the SLI is far sooner going back to their basement to play Black Ops Zombies, than entertain anyone lol.

Ne-Fi Super-Id Block
(Si-Te) - (Fi-Ne) - (Se-Ti) - (Fe-Ni)

The Super-id block is made up of the two functions that the individual is weaker at, but consistently values and wants to get better at. This block has two functions, the mobilizing and the suggestive element. The mobilizing function is something that gives the individual energy, and is an avenue they want to keep actively pursuing to become better.

The Suggestive function is known the "inferior" function in MBTI, and is an aspect that the individual sucks at, needs lots of help and guidance with, but they are open to (and love people who can provide) feedback in this area.

For the SLI, the suggestive and mobilizing functions are Ne and Fi.

Because of Ne suggestive, SLIs often have a terrible time assessing their own potential, and will often downplay themselves in order to appear as the "everyman." But deep down, these types value those who can see their potential, despite the effort to hide it from others. SLIs do this because deep-down they value close connections with others, and they don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable around them, or as if they are closing off potential connections do to appearing "higher" than others. But an Ne ego type (such as an IEE/ENFP) can help to add loads to colour to lives, and to make the day-to-day more enjoyable to experience.

Fi mobilizing makes it so the SLI is deeply interested in establishing closer connections with others, but has a hard time taking the initiative themselves. They will have a very difficult time establishing their sentiments to others, and some may have a very difficult time knowing where the individual SLI stands in a relationship. These types can be extremely awkward when discussing these topics, and hope someone else will take the initiative for them in these endeavours. They will often demonstrate their love and care for others through acts of service, protection, and trying to make it clear indirectly their feelings for the person. Fi ego types have a much easier time making their sentiments known in comparison.

Another SLI in Attack on Titan, Annie Leonhart, is shown to be motivated into action through Armin, and the opportunity to prove to Armin that she is a good person in his eyes. Armin's plan and logic is not what convinces Annie, it's Armin's sentiments and personal feelings towards Annie. Much in a similar way that Mikasa journeys with Eren as a way to indirectly signal her love for him, Annie helps Armin to do the same thing.

Se-Ti Id Block
(Si-Te) - (Fi-Ne) - (Se-Ti) - (Fe-Ne)

The Id Block is made up of functions the individual is very good at. but don't really care that much to talk about, or draw attention to. These two functions are called the Demonstrative and the Ignoring elements.

The Demonstrative element is something that is constantly running in the background, and many people might associate you as having. When it flairs up, tt's extremely bold, noticable, and it's actually the most potent function alongside your base/ dominant function. Because of this, it can lead to a load of mistypes if not careful, as you might think someone's demonstrative element is their base. However, the demonstrative element is not that interesting to the individual. They know they are good at it, but they don't see much value in investing too much time into this element.

The Ignoring function is pretty self-explanatory. It's potent, effective, and it can be used when you need to. But you would much rather spend your time and energy engaging with your ego block, so this is only used as "back-up" when the scenario calls for it. This element is effective and you're good at it, but it's not all that interesting to engage with.

For the SLI, the ignoring and demonstrative functions are Se and Ti.

Typically, Se ignoring makes the SLI a bit of a rebel in a way. These types do not value what the world wants them to do, and instead they prefer to focus on their own physical states. When it comes to conflict, the SLI will prefer to sort things out through other matters first, as conflict is tiring to them. However, if they need to get their hands dirty, or force others to back off through volition, they are quite capable in doing so. He/she only engages with Se if their physical comfort is threatened, or if they have no choice but to throw hands. They can surprisingly fierce and brutal to put down conflict quickly.

Ti demonstrative can make it so the SLI will often try to pick apart someone's statements logically, but they won't treat it with too much seriousness. They do it more-so as an exercise and to keep everyone rational, but they are not the types to believe that life is goverened by some neat system. Life is a lot more fluid, and unpredictable for that to be the case.

How to Spot an SLI in Real Life
  • These types are often down-to-earth and relaxed. Unemotional, and can survive some of the most inhospitable scenarios due to their ability to adapt and find some comforts in anything.
  • Can be blunt with their language, and do not mince their words. If they have a fact, they make it clear.
  • At times, can be surprisingly philosophical, or might bring to light an "unseen" message about life. But it always loops back to their own experiences, and what significance of the inprints left behind by their enviornments say to them.
  • These types are not expressive at all. Essentially has a 24/7 poker face.
  • Values people who are creative, and who encourage them to try new things.
  • Deeply values strong interpersonal relationships, but has great difficulty taking the initiative.
  • If you push them enough, they will have no problem getting physical with you.
  • Can be critical at times, but don't place too much value on emotional consistency.
